Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who created about 2,100 artworks in just over a decade. Though he sold very few paintings during his lifetime, he is now considered one of the most influential artists in Western art history.
His most celebrated works include The Starry Night (1889), Sunflowers (1888), The Bedroom (1888), Irises (1889), and Café Terrace at Night (1888). The Starry Night, painted while he was in an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, is one of the most recognized images in Western culture.
On December 23, 1888, during a period of mental distress and following a confrontation with fellow painter Paul Gauguin, van Gogh severed most of his left ear. The exact circumstances remain debated by historians.
On July 27, 1890, van Gogh shot himself in the chest in a wheat field near Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He died two days later on July 29, at the age of 37.
Van Gogh is classified as a Post-Impressionist. His style is characterized by bold, expressive brushstrokes, vivid colors, and emotional intensity. He moved beyond Impressionism to convey deeper psychological and emotional content, paving the way for Expressionism and modern art.
